Utah rules for garage door work: licensing and exemptions
Which license covers garage doors
Utah licenses contractors by classification. The current rule (R156-55a-301z, effective August 7, 2026) lists garage doors and doors in the scope of the S220 Carpentry and Flooring Contractor specialty license. (source: Utah Office of Administrative Rules)
If you are not sure which classification fits a job, DOPL says to contact it at (801) 530-6628 or (866) 275-3675 (toll free in Utah). (source: Utah Division of Professional Licensing)
What a specialty license requires
- A 25 hour pre-licensure course.
- General liability insurance of at least $1,000,000 per incident and $2,000,000 total, with DOPL as certificate holder.
- Workers compensation insurance if the business has employees, or a coverage waiver if it does not.

The small job exemption
Utah Code 58-55-305 lets a person without a contractor license do alteration, repair, remodeling or improvement work on a building when the contracted value is under $7,000, counting labor, materials and all changes. (source: Utah State Legislature)
- If the project is over $3,000, the person must file an affirmation with DOPL that they carry public liability insurance and, if applicable, workers compensation. DOPL's rule sets the insurance at $1,000,000 per incident and $3,000,000 total, and requires reaffirming by November 30 of each odd year.
- Even on an exempt job, work on the home's electrical system must be done by a licensed electrical contractor. For a component such as an outlet or switch, a licensed journeyman electrician may do it.

On January 1, 2027 this section becomes Utah Code 58-55-110. The new wording leaves any work on an electrical or plumbing system or component out of the small job exemption, and above $3,000 requires registering with the Division of Corporations and Commercial Code and documenting insurance.
